Staying Safe on the Road During Severe Summer Weather

Summer storms can cause dangerous driving conditions. As a driving school in Harrisburg, PA, we want our students and community members to stay safe on the roads when severe weather strikes. Here are some tips for navigating hail, high winds, flooding, and other hazardous summer conditions while behind the wheel:

Hailstorms

• Small hail won’t harm your vehicle, but large hail can damage and even shatter windows. Avoid this by finding safe covered parking until the storm passes. If you must drive, reduce speed and cover yourself in case the windshield breaks.

High Winds

• Gusty winds can blow debris and even push vehicles. Keep both hands firmly on the wheel and drive slowly. Watch for flying objects that could smash your windshield. Give high-profile vehicles extra space.

Flooding

• Turn around, don’t drown! Never attempt to drive through flood waters. Just 12 inches can float a small car. Stick to main roads and beware of washed-out or damaged pavement.

Downed Trees & Power Lines

• Give downed trees, branches, and power lines plenty of clearance. Assume all wires are live. Notify authorities immediately if lines are blocking the road.

Emergency Alerts

• If you receive a severe storm warning while driving, carefully pull over and seek shelter in a sturdy building. Avoid stopping under overpasses which can flood or be exposed to strong winds.

The safest option is to avoid driving altogether during severe weather when possible.
But if you must venture out, drive slowly, keep your eyes peeled for hazards, and have an emergency kit with nonperishable food, water, blankets, and other supplies. Focus on reaching a safe location to wait out the storm.

With smart preparation and defensive driving, you can minimize risks from summer’s rough weather.
